Diamox is an effective drug used for treating glaucoma and acute mountain sickness. The drug is also given for congestive heart failure and seizure disorders.
Diamox is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. The drug can be taken with food or in empty stomach. But if you want to avoid any upset of the stomach, better take it with food. Each of the Diamox drug has to be taken with a full glass of water. While taking the drug, you have to follow your doctor’s prescription and do not deviate from it. Never take larger doses or less or take the drug for longer periods unless your doctor asks you.
If you want good results, you should never miss any dosage. But there is nothing to worry if a dose is missed. Better take the missed dose when you remember it. But never go for the missed dose if it is already time for your regular one. Never compensate for a mixed dose.
Suppose you suspect to have taken an overdose of Diamox, it is better to contact your doctor immediately. Drowsiness, nausea, decreased appetite, numbness, shaking, vomiting, ringing in the ears and dizziness are some of the symptoms that come with an overdose of Diamox.
There are certain conditions which your doctor has to know before he prescribes Diamox. He should be aware of all your allergies to any food, medicine and substances. The doctor should also know if you have disease of the liver, kidney or heart or if you are on aspirin therapy or if you have a hormonal problem. If you have these conditions, your doctor may not prescribe the drug or he may go for a dosage adjustment.
Diamox is FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known if the drug is harmful to the unborn babe. But even then pregnant women and those who wish to have a child should not take the drug without talking to the doctor. It is also not known if the drug passes into breast milk. But breast feeding mothers should take Diamox only after talking to their doctor about the risks and benefits of the drug.
Diamox makes our skin very sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it is better to use some kind of sunscreen lotion or cream when going out after taking the drug.
It has been known that some drugs interact with Diamox. So always inform your doctor about all the medicines that you take, including the prescriptive and the non-prescriptive drugs. It is better to inform your doctor if you are taking any of following medicines: cyclosporine, primidone, diflunisal, aspirin, salsalate and lithium.
As like other drugs, Diamox also comes with many side effects. You may come across allergic reactions like difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, tongue, or face, closing of throat and hives. You may also come across bleeding, groin pain, tremors and skin rashes. If you come across these symptoms, stop the drug immediately and contact your doctor. Some of the lesser known side effects are decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and headache.
